District wide Arrow of Light / Crossover ceremonies

Posted on Dec 11 2015 - 12:27am

Save the Date for District Arrow of Light/Crossover Ceremonies - Feb. 20 & 27, 2016

In an effort to allow this year's Webelos II scouts to crossover into Boy Scouts in time to participate in the Campout 100 event in March, the Order of the Arrow will be offering multiple sessions of the Arrow of Light and Crossover Ceremonies at Christ the King Lutheran Church on February 20 and February 27.

The what and when:
As per the above text (copied from the front page of the District website), the Tella Qualla Boundary Chapter of the Order of the Arrow (OA), will be conducting District wide Arrow of Light and Crossover ceremonies on each of the following two dates only: February 20th and February 27th.

Where: Ceremonies on both dates will take place at Christ the King Lutheran Church (5575 Peachtree Parkway, Norcross, GA 30092).  This is the same location where the monthly Roundtable meetings are held.

The why: In order for current Webelos II Scouts planning to attend the council wide Campout 100 (link to Council info - http://www.atlantabsa.org/event/1764877), they will need to cross over into a Boy Scout Troop prior to the campout.

What each unit needs to do now:  At this time, each Webelos II leader needs to submit their FIRST and SECOND date choice.  In addition to that, please list a time preference.  HOWEVER, be aware that, since the OA is attempting to accommodate each Pack in the District to the best of our ability, specific time requests may not be able to be met.  When submitting your date preferences, please also include, if possible, an estimate of the number of Scouts that will earn the AOL and the number of Scouts that will be crossing over into a Troop. (These numbers don't always match.)

Plan Ahead for Scout Sunday

Posted on Dec 1 2015 - 7:12pm

The Boy Scouts of America designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday, which is the primary date to recognize the contributions of young people and adults to Scouting.

However, each chartered organization can use either of two other options to celebrate this special day. An organization can adopt a specific Sunday to celebrate.

For example, in the United Methodist Church, Scout Sunday is celebrated on the second Sunday in February. It also is permissible for a local church to celebrate on the Sunday most acceptable to the pastor and congregation. Learn more about Scout Sunday at the National BSA site.

Scout Sabbath offers an opportunity for worshippers to honor Scouts and Scouters, as well as to learn more themselves about the value of Scouting as a youth program chartered to a Jewish organization. It gives a rabbi a framework to address Scouts directly, in addition to speaking about Scouting to the congregation.

Scout Sunday is a great opporunity to share Scouting with your community, check out the bulletin insert available for customization and place your order today!
Please place your order BY January 31, and the Council will print them for your unit(s).

District Award of Merit Award Nominations Needed

Posted on Nov 19 2015 - 11:36am

The District Award of Merit is a council award presented by districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils.  The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level.  The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 25 traditional units or fraction thereof. The district need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year. It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award. A professional Scouter or other council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.  For 2015, this form can be emailed to John Giobetti at johngiob@bellsouth.net and David Penton at dpenton251@gmail.com, The deadline for nominations is 30 November 2015.

2016 Klondike Derby

Posted on Nov 13 2015 - 2:23am

With the year almost over, it's time to start gearing up for the 16th annual Button Gwinnett District Klondike Derby this coming February.
Once again, we head to the Great White North of Georgia and Woodruff Scout Reservation.  We will feature a variety of Scout skills and fun activities that take place in six Klondike "towns". The dates are February 5 - 7, 2016.
Last year we added the optional Saturday night spaghetti dinner and we will offer that again this year.  It was a great opportunity, for those attending, to fellowship with Scouts and Scouters from around the District. Pricing for this year's Klondike weekend will be the same as last year: $17 per person with the dinner option OR $12 per person without the dinner.
The weekend will conclude with the annual sled race (weather permitting) and the award ceremony.
Unit leaders: Please plan on attending the roundtable meetings on December 8th (to provide your attendance estimates) and on January 19th (to turn in final number with roster and payment).
We want to thank all that have participated and attended past Klondikes and hope to see as many of you as possible in early February.
Attached to this article you will find the 2016 Klondike Derby packet. This packet can also be found in the "Menu" section under the heading "2016 Klondike Derby Information Files".
