It's time to start preparing to head to the Great White North again.  The 15th annual Button Gwinnett District Klondike Derby is just around the corner.
     Once again, it will be held on the grounds of the AAC's Woodruff Scout Reservation and feature a variety of Scout skills and fun activities that take place in six Klondike "towns". The dates are February 6 - 8, 2015.
     This year we are planning an additional event for the weekend: On Saturday night there will be the opportunity for all attendees to gather for fellowship and a spaghetti dinner in the dining hall. While coming to the dinner will be optional, we hope to see most all of the campers choose this for their Saturday night meal option.  Pricing for this year's campout will be as follows: $17 per person with the dinner option OR $12 per person without the dinner.
     The weekend will conclude with the annual sled race (weather permitting) and the award ceremony.
     Unit leaders: Please plan on attending the December roundtable to provide your attendance estimates and to receive specific information about when and where to submit your final attendance figure and payment. Due to the addition of the Saturday night meal option, we will need to collect solid numbers and payment early in January.
     We want to thank all that have participated and attended past Klondikes and hope to see as many of you as possible in early February.

Saturday, December 6, 2014 is the Button Gwinnett District BSA annual recharter day.  The District Commissioner Staff will be available from 8:00 AM to noon at Simpsonwood United Methodist Church, 4500 Jones Bridge Circle, Norcross, GA 30092. The Button Gwinnett District has the opportunity to elect new District Leaders on an annual basis. A District Nominating committee has been formed under my leadership and is charged with the responsibility of presenting a slate of nominees for the elected positions. The Committee members include David Bone, John Giobetti, John Guerin, Jay Puckhaber, Greg Thurlow, Tom Owens and Kevin Dunn.

Kevin Dye and John Giobetti, ASM’s for Troop 648 and Catholic certified religious emblem coordinators, are facilitating a district wide religious emblem program for Catholic boy scouts.  The program is the third of four Catholic national religious emblems and is called Ad Altare Dei.  This program benefits Catholic boy scouts that have completed 6th grade, have completed at least six months in a BSA troop, and are sufficiently mature to undertake the program, which provides an intense immersion in the sacramental life.  This program will begin on Sunday afternoon, August 24, at 3PM at Mary Our Queen Catholic Church located at 6260 The Corners Parkway Peachtree Corners, GA 30092.  We will conduct the program each Sunday for about an hour.  This will be a challenging program and our goal is for the boys to complete the program in time for the archdiocesan board of review on January 10, 2015 then receive the awards at the Archbishop’s Scout Mass on February 21.
