Cub Day Camp - Postponed, New Date TBA

The Button Gwinnett Day Camp is an exciting part of the Cub Scout journey.  As the coronavirus situation unfolded, we continued to make plans and hold out hope that Day Camps would open on time.

Based upon the State of Georgia guidelines and the current Center for Disease Control’s recommendation for youth, we have made the difficult decision to delay day camps in June.

This summer, we are exploring new options to bring the Day Camp experience and excitement to your Scout!  You should be receiving a survey soon which will help guide our plans to bring you the experiences you deserve while remaining safe.

For your convenience, we will be issuing full refunds for all June Day Camp registrations.  Please allow up to three weeks to receive your refund.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact one of us.

Please check the council website https://www.atlantabsa.org/bg-daycamp and Facebook page www.facebook.com/groups/ButtonGwinnettDayCamp where details will be posted as they are made available.

Thank you for being a part of our Cub Scouting family.  We hope you and yours are safe and healthy during this time.  We look forward to seeing you at camp as soon as we can gather together again.

Looking for Ideas for your Kids? Try Scouting from Home

If you haven't seen it yet, the Atlanta Area Council has developed a terrific site with all kinds of activities for you kids--Scouts and non-Scouts.

Here you will find a resource hub for parents and leaders to help support Scouting at home, with stay-at-home educational activities for any Scout rank, tips for continuing to work on advancements and kid-friendly content that connects Scouting with their daily lives.

The goal is to make it easier to deliver the Scouting program by making plans more accessible to Leaders and parents. Check it out:

District Scouts Serve the VA Medical Center

Jeff Brown, a Scouting volunteer from Pack & Troop 525 in Peachtree Corners is an administrator at the VA Medical Center in Decatur. Because of the COVID-19 virus, the employees and patients are restricted to only one access point for the building, and all patients and employees have to be screened with questions asked and temperatures taken. The patient entrance is covered and protected all the way into the building, but to separate the groups, the employees have to be diverted and consequently part of their new entry path is not covered. Jeff coordinated with the Button Gwinnett District to borrow the pop-up tents that normally would be used for the District’s Day Camp and erect them on the VA site to provide weather and sun protection for the employees as they wait to be screened and enter the building.

Scouts and leaders from Troops 419/420 (Michael Holtmann—father & son, Jonathan & Joey D’Anna, David & Dave Bone, Ryan & Dick Shoupe) and 525 (Ethan & Jeff Brown, Patrick Elder) and the District (Zach Fisher, Craig Belnap, Jenny & Bob Chapin) erected the tents, secured them with sandbags and marked off “social distancing” spots in the line.

The project was featured in an interview with Atlanta Area Council Chief Executive Tracy Techau. You can watch that interview here:

It was also featured in in today’s email to all Atlanta scouters from the Council.
